Gender equality at the local level – topic of discussion at the Parliamentary Committee on Equal Opportunities
Тhe Committee for Equal Opportunities of women and men at the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia held a working meeting where besides the members of the Committee, there were representatives from the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, the Inter-sectorial consultative and advisory group for equal opportunities of women and men, the Coordinators for equal opportunities of the Ministries, members of the local Committees for equal opportunities, representatives of the civil sector and experts, as well as representatives of the diplomatic corps and international organizations active in the field of gender equality.
On the behalf of the project of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation “Empowering Municipal Councils”, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), there was an address from Ms. Zaklina Gestakovska Aleksovska who presented the activities of the project and the programme in the field of gender equality. In her address, Ms. Gestakovska Aleksovska underlined the trainings organized for the members of the Councils of the Municipalities and the members of the local Committees for Equal Opportunities, about the work of the Theme working group of the Council of Municipalities, the support that the project is giving in regards to networking and lobbying of women councillors on national and international level as well as the benefits of the project and challenges that the local committees face. Recommendations from the Theme group on gender equality were shared, which intend to improve the work of the committees in the long term, as agents of equal opportunities in the local communities.
The working meeting of the Committee for Equal Opportunities of women and men at the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia was held on 3rd of February 2020.
Empowering Municipal Councils is a new project designed to increase transparency and accountability in local government by strengthening municipal councils in their functions, particularly in overseeing local budgets. The main aim of the project is to support municipalities in achieving greater openness and inclusiveness, helping to build public trust in local institutions.
